Lagier-Meredith, Syrah, 6 Bottle Case 75cl

Equivalent Bottle Price £42.99

Steve Lagier and Carole Meredith first bought their remote property high up on Mt. Veeder back in 1984. After many years of preparing the ground and planting a vineyard they eventually released their first commercial vintage in 2000.

Situated down a 1.5 mile access road and boasting some of the best views in the Napa Valley, the property is 84 acres of which only 4 are planted to vines. The rest remains in its natural state—a rich and complex forest composed of redwoods, Douglas fir, madrone, black oak, big leaf maple and bay laurel, populated with deer, turkeys, raccoons, foxes, skunks, bobcats, squirrels, coyotes and the occasional mountain lion.

Soils here are marine in heritage, mostly sandstone and shale and all work is carried out by Steve and Carole themselves with no employees, consultants, partners or investors. Steve has a wealth of experience making wine at garage scale but also with 10 years working at Robert Mondavi winery, in all he has clocked up 40 Napa harvests since his days studying biochemistry at UC Davis. Carole spent much of her career at UC Davis where she became renowned for her work on grape genetics, tracking down the origins of a host of well-known varieties. Her research is directly responsible for the successful genealogical validation of Zinfandel, Petite Syrah among numerous others.

Syrah is the focus at Lagier-Meredith where all work is geared towards a genuine expression of their vineyard which is blessed with shallow, rocky soils and cooling winds from the San Pablo bay which also keep things dry – ideal conditions for ripening Syrah with a high skin to juice ratio

A few must haves
