Born in into a family who have pioneered organic viticulture from as early as the 1970s, Aurélien Verdet has always been driven to carry on the tradition. Originally, having 8 hectares of vines in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Aurélien expanded greatly, adding to his own Domaine holdings in Vosne Romanée village and strictly limited plots of 1ers Crus in 2009, then in 2015 added further holdings in Marsannay and Comblanchien/ Côtes de Nuits Villages.
He augments his range through grape contracts under which he lays down the criteria for the early part of the growing season with his suppliers. He then takes over the vineyard work in July and harvests and vinifies the grapes then bottles the wines. In tradition of his upbringing, the grapes are tended organically (though only his own Domaine vines are AB Certified).
Grapes are harvested manually and all the cuvées are vinified the same way: he uses minimal sulphur and since 2013, he has been leaving up to 30% whole bunch. Ten days cold maceration on the skins is followed by fermentation/maceration lasts for 30 days with gentle extraction. The wines are aged in oak barrels sourced from Tronçais and Vosges forests and not exceeding 1/3 new each year.
Certified Biodynamic, Verdet crafts complex and no-compromise wines from some of Côte-de-Nuits' finest sites. A hint of game in the aroma gives way to bright cherry and black currant fruit in this silky red. Toast and baking spice details add complexity as this sails through a long finish. Shows terrific balance and finesse.
