The Superiore wine of Calicantus is a co-harvest of local grapes, Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and Sangiovese from a tiny 1-hectare parcel. The vines were planted 11 years ago on the highest-elevation parcel in the appellation, at 175m. The soil here is calcium limestone which provides superb minerality to the vines which show in this elegant wine. It is “serious”, structured wine capable of long ageing. Only 4,000 bottles made.
The wine spends 6 months in oak after previously being in concrete vats to breathe and develop complexity. The nose is a natural expression of the grapes with an earthy, light-medium body. Flavours of baked cherries and raspberries and some fresh blackberries also with some light cedar flavours moving into dark chocolate. A superbly balanced wine with focus, finesse and a sense of place where it is made.
Grape Variety: Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Sangiovese.
