Domaine Louis Chenu Père & Filles is a small (9.5 hectares) family-owned and run estate in Savigny-lès-Beaune. The Chenu family have been growing grapes and making wine for five generations. The first parcels of ‘domaine’ vineyards were purchased by Louis Chenu in 1914, and they are owned today by his great-grandson, Louis Chenu, helped by his wife and two daughters. They prioritise the respect of the vineyard and its environment and the quality as well as the distinctiveness of their wines. Over the last few years, it has primarily been the daughters Juliette and Caroline who have teamed up to invigorate the domaine and maximize the quality of the wines, not least through the significant decision to convert the entire estate to organic wine production. Certification was awarded in 2006.
As far as the winemaking is concerned, grapes are fully destemmed, only native yeasts are used and new oak is employed only very sparingly, usually just for the top 1ers Crus. Levels of S02 are intentionally kept low. The wines are neither fined nor filtered. The wines express their origins most eloquently but with a gentler ‘voice’ rather than brashness and showiness. These are wines of elegance and charm fashioned in an intensely appetising style.
